I gather after 10.7 the server offering was put on the back burner, which is a shame. Third party tools like Radmind, Casper and Altiris came and went, and never worked as well as the suite of tools that came with OS X server.

While my Windows colleagues were deploying massive racks of servers and maxing out the budget with Microsoft to handle SCCM, Active Directory, network home folders etc etc, the entire university campus mac estate was served by three x-serves including fault tolerance/high availability. deploying x-serves with OS X server (10.4 at the time) was really easy and just worked, even with complicated MCX profiles, xgrid for laboratory machines and netboot.
